celebrating the waterfront

city pattern

eroding the waterfront

generative network

As years go by the system generates a distribution network. Since the first block is set pedestrian’s movement is defined. When the system is grown enough it becomes a neighborhood. Each neighborhood has a perimetric car road and some green spaces. As the system becomes more complex serial roads are adjoined together and become main roads. Besides, bicycle roads and bus lanes emerge.

juncture - network

The elements of the emerging inner network connect to the sockets of the city’s road network while following existing obstacles, such as the train line.

neighborhoods

The same concept is applied to the new block’s formation.

density

The new formation, even if it is very different from the existing one, collects qualities of density, rarefaction and partition from all the neighborhoods of Belgrade.

inputs

The organisms that emerge after implantations cannot grow eternally. There is a range of built and landscape factors that govern the procedureCurrent inputs specify the type of the system and the way it grows.

Nearby water grows a hydric corrosive system that changes the use and morph of the land’s edge.

Some obstacles -territory’s line, polluted area (virus)-, bridge (artery) are setting back the development of urban systems.

Wind flow and orientation determine system’s direction.

size and density patterns

Someone can choose between the patterns the one that fits best his scenario. According to our scenario the first transplant operation needs a pattern of medium density, large and small places.

algoritm of the built

The system develops itself through an inner algorithm where units are multiplied exponentially. Moreover, the system can mutate, like a virus, and produce a variation of patterns of size and density.

the scenario

The more the system expands, the better resolution acquires.
According to the scenario, most of the users are young people (20-40)
Users at the age of 20 to 40 occupy very big or very small places. Middle-aged and old people occupy medium size spaces.

hybrid places: example

operation 2: sequential implementation

operation 1: hybrid spaces

Hybrid places are the ones that are neither private nor public.

Hybrid spaces can provide opportunities to many creative projects. For example, musicians, theater companies can use spaces for practicing; artists can create studios in these buildings. Moreover, young professionals can cohabit and, generally, young people can share a cheap room with someone. A low-budget living space system is created. Isolated activities can meet the mass public. Art and theater shows, contemporary dance performances, concerts from jazz, world music to blues and punk, musicians from all over the world, circus shows, artistic performances, literature evenings, academic presentments, festivals, fashion shows are some examples of possible functions.

The proposal aims in a sequential vaccination of hybrid spaces in the site. Each vaccination will act as a pole for the creation of a new neighborhood. The more the system grows the more spaces are split in public and private ones in order to achieve the complexity of a real neighborhood.

the concept- implantation

the displayed site is compared to a vacant uterus of the city's body. implantation time has come.

THE FORMATION OF A FROG EMBRYO

The embryo starts as a ball of cells. The ball splits down the middle. An axis is introduced. The wholeness of each stage is consistent with the wholeness of the previous stage. The centers which exist in the wholeness at each stage --both large centers dominating the big pattern, and small ones locally-- are largely left intact by the next transformation. The next transformation introduces new structures, usually in the form of new asymmetrically place local symmetries which induce new layers of structure --hence a new differentiation-– but rarely or never disperse the underlying deep structure of the old, even when it changes things.

the tool-resolutioning

Like every living organism the systems grows up through an evolutionary process, which means that the wholeness of each stage is consistent with the wholeness of the previous stage.
We thought that we need a big pattern with large centers and small ones, locally. Each transformation introduces new structures.
Thus, we can call this tool “resolutioning”.

The “resolutioning” tool produces qualities such as condensing, rarefaction, erosion, partition, diffusion; coiling and stretching that already kind of exist in cities.

inputs/outputs

seeking for a system

The design aims to enterprise the reformation of the particular site not as instant decisions or actions but just like evolutionary process integrated with time parameters. We don’t seek for a final morph, but for a system and its rules. The internal rules of the system incorporate with the inputs (current regional data) to calculate the outputs.
